The representatives of the eurozone and the International Monetary Fund had crucial meetings in Athens on Saturday with the leaders of the three parties supporting the new Greek government, aimed exclusively at resolving the issue with the written guarantees to Greece’s creditors...

Reports from the office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos as well as from the IMF headquarter in the US suggested that Greece’s creditors will not insist on written guarantees after all. The latter reports cite an unnamed “senior IMF official” in Washington as their source.
On Saturday the troika met with PASOK president George Papandreou first, with the IMF representative Poul Thomsen answering “no comment” to journalists’ questions about the meeting. Sources close to the former Prime Minister expressed their worries about the supply of guarantees by the other parties.
The creditors’ representatives then met New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras before wrapping up meetings with LAOS president Giorgos Karatzaferis.
Both Samaras and Karatzaferis remain adamant that a written guarantee, on top of the verbal and actual support to the October 27 agreement through participation in the new coalition government of Lucas Papademos, would compromise national dignity.
The troika’s discussions in Athens as well as the meetings Prime Minister Papademos will have on Monday and Tuesday in Brussels and Luxembourg will likely determine the disbursement of the sixth tranche of 8 billion euros that is vital for Greece to avoid a default.
